Theros is a world where myths are real. The gods live atop Mount Nyx, the sun and stars are divine manifestations, and heroes accomplish legendary feats. It was here that Elspeth Tirel sought refuge — and met her end.
The Pantheon of Theros
Fifteen gods ruled over Theros, each embodying an aspect of existence:
- Heliod — God of the sun and justice
- Thassa — Goddess of the sea and knowledge
- Erebos — God of the dead and wealth
- Purphoros — God of the forge and fire
- Nylea — Goddess of the hunt and nature
The Sun's Champion
Elspeth Tirel arrived on Theros in flight. Traumatized by the horrors of New Phyrexia, she sought a world where she could finally find peace. Instead, she found another battle to fight.
Heliod chose her as his champion, granting her a divine weapon — Godsend. With this weapon, Elspeth defeated monsters, accomplished heroic feats, and earned the admiration of all Theros.
The Divine Betrayal
But Heliod was a jealous god. When Elspeth became too popular, too powerful, he feared she might threaten his position. Mortals were beginning to worship her rather than him.
In an act of ultimate betrayal, Heliod killed Elspeth with her own weapon. The god of the sun and 'justice' murdered his most faithful champion out of pure paranoia.
The Underworld of Theros
Elspeth's soul descended into the realm of Erebos, the god of the dead. There, she joined the countless deceased of Theros, imprisoned for eternity — unless she could find a way to escape.
Her story on Theros seemed to be over. But true heroes don't stay dead for long...
