Kamigawa is a world of spirits and mortals. For millennia, the two realms coexisted in peace. But when a mortal warlord committed an unforgivable sacrilege, he unleashed a war that nearly destroyed both worlds.
The World of Spirits

On Kamigawa, every object, every place, every concept had a kami — a spirit that embodied it. These spirits lived in a parallel realm, the Kakuriyo, separated from the mortal world (Utsushiyo) by a mystical veil.
Mortals and kami maintained a relationship of mutual respect. Humans made offerings to the spirits, and the kami blessed their worshippers in return.
Konda's Sacrilege

Konda, warlord of Eiganjo, did the unthinkable. To obtain immortality, he stole a sacred fragment of O-Kagachi, the great kami. This theft unleashed the fury of the spirit world.
The Kami War erupted. The spirits, once benevolent, attacked the mortal world indiscriminately. Entire villages were destroyed. Thousands of people perished.
