The Five Clans

Each clan of Tarkir worshipped an aspect of the vanished dragons:
- Abzan — Endurance, discipline, family
- Jeskai — Wisdom, martial arts, enlightenment
- Sultai — Cruelty, necromancy, ambition
- Mardu — Speed, war, conquest
- Temur — Savagery, survival, strength
The Time Travel

Sarkhan Vol discovered a way to travel into Tarkir's past — to a time when dragons still lived. There, he saved Ugin, the spirit dragon, from certain death at the hands of Nicol Bolas.
This change to the past rewrote Tarkir's history. The dragons were never exterminated. Instead, they conquered the clans and enslaved them.
The New Tarkir

In this new timeline, five Dragonlords ruled over the transformed clans. What had seemed like a victory for Sarkhan turned out to be a tyranny of a different kind.
