Marvel Super Heroes (set code MSH) isn't a Secret Lair but a full Magic set in the Universes Beyond line: its cards are legal in Standard, Pioneer, Modern, and Commander, and the worldwide tabletop release is set for June 26, 2026. On the Limited side, Marvel Super Heroes draft returns to a complete format with 10 archetypes — one per color pair — built around mechanics like Teamwork, Power-Up, and Plan. Here's what you need to understand before cracking your first Play Boosters, and the sleeve reflex you shouldn't overlook.

Marvel Super Heroes: a Universes Beyond set legal in Standard

First thing to clarify: Marvel Super Heroes is a main set in the Universes Beyond line, not a side product. With its MSH set code and 384 cards, it slots directly into Constructed formats, just like a classic Magic set.

Marvel Super Heroes is a complete set in the Universes Beyond line: its cards are legal in Standard, Pioneer, Modern, and Commander, with a tabletop release set for June 26, 2026.

Per Wizards of the Coast / WPN

The schedule is known. Prereleases run from June 19 to 25, 2026, the MTG Arena release is set for June 23, and the worldwide tabletop release for June 26, 2026. Digital players will therefore open the set a few days before brick-and-mortar stores. The French situation has its own quirks, detailed here.

On the product side, each Play Booster contains 14 Magic cards: 7 commons, 3 uncommons, 1 "wildcard" card, 1 rare or mythic, and 1 traditional foil, plus 1 land and 1 bonus card or token. Nothing exotic for anyone who has opened a recent set.

The set is part of a packed 2026 Magic calendar, and also feeds Commander, already served by precons like Avengers Assemble. For the full product breakdown, see our pre-release guide.

Ten Limited archetypes: what we know (and what we don't yet)

The heart of the draft is the archetype grid. Marvel Super Heroes returns to a complete format: 10 archetypes, one per color pair ("guild"), rather than the five pairs of some recent sets. Each color pairing therefore gets an identifiable draft direction.

The archetype guide published by MTG Arena Zone details these ten directions one by one, with deck skeletons to back them up. A caveat: it's one author's analysis, from a digital-draft perspective on MTG Arena, not an official word from Wizards. Read it as a framework, not as gospel.

As of this writing, public analyses focus mostly on five pairs: Azorius, Orzhov, Boros, Selesnya, and Dimir. The other five — Izzet, Simic, Rakdos, Golgari, Gruul — remain to be confirmed with the set in hand. Rather than guessing their themes, it's better to test them at prerelease: that's where the format's true hierarchy takes shape.

Teamwork, Power-Up, Plan: the mechanics that dictate the draft

Three mechanics structure the set, and therefore your first picks.

Teamwork (which some mistakenly shorten to "Team-Up") is an optional additional cost: to cast certain instants or sorceries, you tap creatures whose combined power reaches a stated value. The draft consequence: the more creatures you line up, the more these spells become "free." Go-wide strategies gain a second use here.

Power-Up is a once-only activated ability that puts +1/+1 counters. Plan introduces a new enchantment subtype that works with counters. Added to these is Connive, a returning keyword that has you draw then discard while rewarding the nonland cards you pitch, plus modal double-faced cards able to transform.

MechanicTypeWhat it does
TeamworkOptional additional costTap creatures whose combined power reaches a threshold to cast an instant or sorcery
Power-UpActivated ability (once)Puts +1/+1 counters on a creature
PlanEnchantment subtypeNew enchantment that works with counters
ConniveTriggered keyword (returning)Draw then discard; +1/+1 per nonland discarded

For the drafter, the lesson is simple: these mechanics reward consistency. A deck that stacks creatures feeds Teamwork; a counters deck takes advantage of Power-Up and Plan. Reading these synergies as you open your packs beats chasing the flashiest card.

Source Material cards: hunting for comic artworks

The big collecting novelty is the Source Material cards. The set has 60 different designs, at a rate of about 1 non-foil card every 24 Play Boosters — suffice it to say they're hard-earned.

Their concept: pair an original comic artwork — by legends like Jack Kirby, Alex Ross, Dan Adkins, or Tony S. Daniel — with the name, cost, and text of a playable legendary creature. A nod to Marvel's historic panels, turned into a functional Magic card.

For the drafter, the impact is twofold: rare to open, and therefore precious, these cards deserve immediate protection the moment they leave the booster — their sentimental and market value alike justify it.

Which boosters to choose and how to protect your pool

That leaves the practical side: what to open, and how to protect what you pull.

For draft, Play Boosters are what you want: 14 cards designed for Limited. Collector Boosters target collectors after premium versions instead. If the trade-off escapes you, our Play Booster vs Collector Booster guide spells out the differences.

On the protection side, a draft pool means dozens of cards handled all evening long. Opaque, durable sleeves prevent the back markings that would give away your rares. The go-to remains the Dragon Shield Matte in packs of 100, whose matte coating limits glare and wear.

To compare finishes, thicknesses, and sizes, our Dragon Shield vs Ultra Pro vs KMC: Sleeve Comparison covers the whole question.

Key takeaways

Marvel Super Heroes isn't a gimmick: it's a full-fledged Universes Beyond set, legal in Constructed, with a 10-archetype draft and three mechanics to master. The deck skeletons making the rounds are leads, not certainties — the June 19 prerelease will settle it. Until then, one rule holds for every format: sleeve your picks from the very first pack you open. Which archetype will you try first?
