It was here that Elspeth Tirel sought refuge \u2014 and met her end.<\/p>\n\n<h2>The Pantheon of Theros<\/h2>\n\n<!-- mtg_card: card not found: Heliod, God of the Sun -->\n\n<p>Fifteen gods ruled over Theros, each embodying an aspect of existence:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Heliod<\/strong> \u2014 God of the sun and justice<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thassa<\/strong> \u2014 Goddess of the sea and knowledge<\/li>\n<li><strong>Erebos<\/strong> \u2014 God of the dead and wealth<\/li>\n<li><strong>Purphoros<\/strong> \u2014 God of the forge and fire<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nylea<\/strong> \u2014 Goddess of the hunt and nature<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2>The Sun's Champion<\/h2>\n\n<!-- mtg_card: card not found: Elspeth, Sun&#039;s Champion -->\n\n<p><strong>Elspeth Tirel<\/strong> arrived on Theros in flight. Traumatized by the horrors of New Phyrexia, she sought a world where she could finally find peace. Instead, she found another battle to fight.<\/p>\n\n<p>Heliod chose her as his champion, granting her a divine weapon \u2014 <strong>Godsend<\/strong>. With this weapon, Elspeth defeated monsters, accomplished heroic feats, and earned the admiration of all Theros.<\/p>\n\n<h3>The Divine Betrayal<\/h3>\n\n<!-- mtg_card: card not found: Godsend -->\n\n<p>But Heliod was a jealous god. When Elspeth became too popular, too powerful, he feared she might threaten his position. Mortals were beginning to worship her rather than him.<\/p>\n\n<p>In an act of ultimate betrayal, <strong>Heliod killed Elspeth<\/strong> with her own weapon. The god of the sun and 'justice' murdered his most faithful champion out of pure paranoia.<\/p>\n\n<h2>The Underworld of Theros<\/h2>\n\n<!-- mtg_card: card not found: Athreos, God of Passage -->\n\n<p>Elspeth's soul descended into the <strong>realm of Erebos<\/strong>, the god of the dead. There, she joined the countless deceased of Theros, imprisoned for eternity \u2014 unless she could find a way to escape.<\/p>\n\n<p>Her story on Theros seemed to be over.
