For centuries, it had waited, slowly spreading, infecting the mycosynth \u2014 the living metal that formed the foundation of all life on Mirrodin.<\/p>\n\n<h2>The First Signs<\/h2>\n\n<p>The inhabitants of Mirrodin first noticed subtle changes. Metal creatures developed bizarre organic growths. The mycosynth took on grotesque shapes. One by one, the Mirran strongholds fell. The heroes were killed or corrupted. Her existence represented a fragile hope \u2014 perhaps a cure was possible?<\/p>\n\n<p>But before a cure could be developed, Mirrodin fell. The plane was renamed <strong>New Phyrexia<\/strong> \u2014 and the praetors began to look toward other worlds to conquer.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Karn Liberated<\/h2>\n\n<p>At the heart of New Phyrexia, <strong>Karn<\/strong> was a prisoner \u2014 his mind corrupted by the very oil he had brought himself. His sacrifice transferred his spark to the golem, giving him the power to escape \u2014 but also overwhelming guilt.<\/p>\n\n<p>Karn escaped from New Phyrexia, vowing to find a way to save what he had created.
