The Sylex blast had destroyed everything.<\/strong> Argoth was nothing but a smoking crater, his brother Mishra lay in pieces of flesh and metal, and Dominaria's climate was tipping into an ice age that would last millennia. But at the heart of this cataclysm, something extraordinary had happened: Urza's planeswalker spark had ignited.<\/p>\n\n

Welcome to episode 2 of our exploration of Magic: The Gathering's lore. Today, we follow Urza<\/strong> on his journeys across the Multiverse \u2014 an odyssey marked by madness, guilt, and a single obsession: destroying Phyrexia<\/strong>. This quest will lead him to create wonders... and catastrophes.<\/p>\n\n

The awakening of a broken god<\/h2>\n\n

Urza did not awaken as a triumphant hero. He awoke as a monster<\/strong>. The Mightstone and the Weakstone, the two halves of the stone that had sealed Phyrexia millennia earlier, had fused with his skull, replacing his eyes. Through these gems, he now saw the Multiverse in all its terrifying immensity.<\/p>\n\n

The Sylex destroyed Argoth, triggered an ice age, and turned Urza into one of the most powerful beings in the Multiverse \u2014 but at what cost?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n

The survivor's madness<\/h3>\n\n

Urza's first years as a planeswalker were marked by profound mental instability<\/strong>. He had killed his own brother. He had discovered that Mishra had not been human for years \u2014 that a Phyrexian monster had taken his place. Worse still, he now realized that his entire war<\/strong>, thirty-six years of carnage, had served only to weaken Dominaria against the true threat.<\/p>\n\n

Urza wandered the Multiverse aimlessly, fleeing his memories. He spent decades on some planes, seconds on others. Time no longer had meaning for an Oldwalker \u2014 those quasi-divine beings who did not age, whose body was merely a projection of their will.<\/p>\n\n

During this dark period, an obsession grew within him: to understand Phyrexia<\/strong>. Not to make peace. To destroy it, down to the last drop of black oil.<\/p>\n\n

Xantcha: the unlikely ally<\/h2>\n\n

It was in the depths of Phyrexia itself<\/strong> that Urza found his first true ally. During one of his suicidal incursions into the mechanical plane, he encountered a unique creature: Xantcha<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Xantcha was a 'newt' \u2014 a Phyrexian created to infiltrate other worlds. But she had developed something impossible: a consciousness and free will.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n

A Phyrexian who refused Phyrexia<\/h3>\n\n

Xantcha was what the Phyrexians called a \"newt\"<\/strong> \u2014 a sleeper agent, created to resemble a human and infiltrate civilizations before the invasion. But something had gone wrong in her creation. Instead of blind loyalty to the Father of Machines, Xantcha had developed an individuality<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

She hated Phyrexia. She hated what she was. And when she met Urza, mad with rage and pain, she saw an opportunity: someone capable of doing what she could not do alone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

For centuries, Xantcha accompanied Urza on his journeys. She became his anchor \u2014 the voice of reason when his madness threatened to consume him. She taught him everything she knew about Phyrexia: its structure of nine spheres, its factions, its weaknesses.<\/p>\n\n

But above all, she gave him something he had lost since Mishra's death: a reason to live<\/strong> beyond vengeance.<\/p>\n\n

The heartstone<\/h3>\n\n

At the center of Xantcha's chest was her heartstone<\/strong> \u2014 a Phyrexian artifact that gave her life and consciousness. Without it, Xantcha was merely an empty shell. This stone would later become the crucial element in the creation of someone else...<\/p>\n\n

Xantcha died fighting the demon Gix<\/strong>, the same Phyrexian praetor who had corrupted Mishra centuries earlier. Her death broke something in Urza \u2014 but it also left him a legacy: her heartstone, and the certainty that even Phyrexia's creations could choose freedom<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Serra's Realm: the lost paradise<\/h2>\n\n

Wounded in soul and body after a disastrous confrontation with Phyrexia, Urza sought refuge. He found it in one of the most beautiful planes ever created: Serra's Realm<\/strong>, the kingdom of the planeswalker Serra.<\/p>\n\n

On the left, Serra the Benevolent<\/strong> \u2014 an Oldwalker of immense power, who had chosen to use her power to create rather than destroy. In the center, Serra's Sanctum<\/strong>, the spiritual heart of her artificial kingdom. On the right, a Serra Angel<\/strong>, one of the countless winged creatures she had shaped from pure white mana.<\/p>\n\n

A perfect artificial plane<\/h3>\n\n

Serra's Realm was an artificial plane<\/strong> \u2014 an entire reality created by the will of a single planeswalker. Unlike natural planes such as Dominaria, it required constant maintenance. Serra dedicated a portion of her essence to maintaining the balance.<\/p>\n\n

The realm was a utopia of light, order, and peace<\/strong>. Crystal cathedrals rose toward eternally golden skies. Angels watched over human communities living in harmony. No disease, no war, no suffering.<\/p>\n\n

Urza spent five years<\/strong> there healing \u2014 an eternity for a mortal, the blink of an eye for an Oldwalker. Serra cared for him with patience, seeing in him not a hero, but a broken being who deserved compassion.<\/p>\n\n

The worm in the fruit<\/h3>\n\n

But Urza could not stay. His war against Phyrexia was not over. When he left Serra's Realm with Xantcha, he did not know that he was condemning paradise<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

The Phyrexians had followed him. They had traced his passage<\/strong> through the Blind Eternities. Shortly after his departure, a Phyrexian invasion force attacked Serra's Realm.<\/p>\n\n

\"Radiant,<\/a>
Radiant, the archangel whom Serra left in charge of her realm. She did not know that Phyrexian sleeper agents were already manipulating her court.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n

Serra, heartbroken by this corruption of her perfect work, abandoned her realm<\/strong>. She could no longer bear to see the Phyrexian black mana defile what she had created with so much love. She left her archangel Radiant<\/strong> in charge and fled to Dominaria.<\/p>\n\n

It was a fatal mistake. Without Serra to maintain the balance, the plane began to degrade<\/strong>. Worse still, Phyrexian sleeper agents manipulated Radiant, pushing her into paranoia and tyranny. The utopia became a nightmare.<\/p>\n\n

Serra herself died on Dominaria, assassinated by a black planeswalker. She could have healed herself, but her will to live had died with her realm. Paradise was dead \u2014 and it was Urza's fault<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

The Tolarian Academy: the laboratory of time<\/h2>\n\n

The death of Xantcha and the destruction of Serra's Realm could have broken Urza permanently. Instead, they focused<\/strong> him. He understood that he could not defeat Phyrexia alone, nor even with a few allies. He needed an army<\/strong>. He needed time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

On the island of Tolaria<\/strong>, off the coast of Dominaria, Urza founded what would become the greatest magical and scientific institution in the Multiverse: the Tolarian Academy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

The Tolarian Academy \u2014 a place where the brightest minds of Dominaria worked on projects that defied the laws of reality. And where time itself became a weapon.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n

Master Malzra and his recruits<\/h3>\n\n

Urza did not reveal his true identity. Under the pseudonym of \"Master Malzra\"<\/strong>, he gathered the greatest talents of Dominaria: artificers, mages, mathematicians, biologists. All recruited for a single purpose \u2014 which they did not know: to prepare for war against Phyrexia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n
